Obtaining an Agent/Manager

After deciding to pursue a certain facet of the entertainment industry and obtaining exposure and experience via the methods discussed above, you should be ready to find an agent that will work with you individually to further your career. Unfortunately, living in a major city is almost a requirement to obtain a well-established agent or management group. However, by the time an actor or model requires an agent, he or she should be initiated enough in the entertainment industry to require a permanent relocation to a major coastal city.
It is your responsibility to select an agent or manager who is right for you individually. You can do so by simply sending out your picture and resume to all the agents/managers in your area. They will communicate with you if they are impressed with your picture and are interested in representing you. Contact a few different agencies/managers and see what they require. More importantly, ask what they can provide for you and make your decision based on what appeals to you. The key to success is retaining an agent/manager that is well established and experienced! Ask for references and credentials before signing any contracts and seek the advice of a lawyer if you are not absolutely certain about the contents of a contract presented to you. We advise you to work under a non-exclusive 1-2 year contract in order to make certain your agent/manager performs his or her duties adequately and professionally.
*It is your duty as an actor or model to mail out your portfolios to agencies, casting directors, and production companies. This process can be fairly costly and requires a significant amount of time. If you are patient and consistent, you may see some results. Most of the time your headshots will end up in a file with thousands of other pictures, or simply trashed.
