Create a modeling portfolio that wins!

There are several key elements to create a modeling portfolio that is going to get you work and win over potential photographers, media. As a model, you will work so hard to get your modeling portfolio in the hands of these people. If you have not created a winning portfolio you have just wasted your time. Your modeling portfolio should be updated often as you gain experience and eye catching photos. Here are some tips on how to create a modeling portfolio that wins.
Eye catching images!
The first thing an industry professional will see is the images in your portfolio. Set your standards high and meticulously critique each image. Photographers, art directors and agencies will remember your best as well as worst image in your modeling portfolio. Depending on experience you should have multiple styles and looks. This includes different angle head shots, hairs styles, makeup and backgrounds. Should all photos be in color? Not necessarily. It is recommended to have a few black and white photos as they are still often used in media.
How many images should be in your Modeling Portfolio?
It is recommended for new models to have 5 - 10 photos in their modeling portfolio. As their experience and talent grows additional photos can be added. Remember that you will be judged by your worst photo in your portfolio. Do not add average photos just to have more pictures. This will only hurt you in the long run. It is best to have different expressions from serious to smiling. Different styles of fashion is also important. Casual shots are just as important as high fashion. You do not have to have a bathing suit shot but their should be a photo to give a client a better idea of your body type. Remember their is work for all types of models. Do not try to be something you are not in your portfolio as it will only frustrate a media director. Your model portfolio should be a way to present your personality an style. Remember quality is more important than quantity when adding photos to your modeling portfolio.
Image sizes for your Modeling Portfolio
There are four popular sizes for photos that should be included in your modeling portfolio. These sizes include (8 X 10), (8.5 X 11), (9 X 12) and (11 X 14). The exact size that should be used in your modeling portfolio will depend on the metropolitan market that you are in. Different cities prefer different size photos. It is recommended that you get in touch with professionals in your area to see what is most commonly used. If you are doing print work a (8.5 X 11) is best so your tearsheets will properly fit in a book.
Working with Photographers
If you can work with multiple photographers to create your modeling portfolio you will end up with a more creative appearance. Different photographers use different styles of shots to show off your ability to portray various characters. You can arrange photo shoots without paying money with TFCD and TFP. TFP is an industry term used for "Time for Prints" while TFCD is for "Time for CD". These are common agreements between models and photographers as a low cost way to build up a modeling portfolio.
